Your lineage. Your father’s name. Satyakāma had none of these. Born to a servant woman who could not tell him who his father was, Satyakāma walked out of his village with no caste, no inheritance, and no credentials — armed with only one thing: a commitment to tell the truth about who he was, no matter what it cost him. In this lecture, we follow his story from the Chāndogya Upaniṣad (Chapter 4): a boy rejected by every social metric, accepted by a sage on the strength of his honesty alone, and then sent into the forest to tend four hundred lean cows — where he receives the teachings of Brahman not from priests or manuscripts, but from a bull, a fire, a swan, and a diver-bird.
