What if the only reason we know it existed at all is because its enemies quoted it — just to tear it down? In this lecture, we explore Bṛhaspati, the shadowy founder of the Cārvāka (Lokāyata) school — India’s oldest materialist tradition. Born in the same intellectual ferment that produced the Buddha, the Cārvākas denied the soul, mocked the Vedas, rejected karma and rebirth, and redefined paradise not as a heavenly realm but as a life lived free from the control of others. Their reward? Two thousand years of suppression. Their foundational text — the Cārvāka-sūtra — is completely lost. What survives comes only through hostile quotations preserved by philosophers who despised everything Cārvāka stood for. We’re hearing a philosophy through the mouths of its executioners. And yet from the Buddha’s era to the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th century nobody could forget them. The question kept asking itself. Join me as we reconstruct what we can from the fragments: a radical empiricism, a political philosophy of autonomy, and a voice that refused to stay silent — even when everyone with power tried to make it disappear.
