<description>In this final lecture of our Ancient Indian Philosophy series, we turn to Siddhārtha Gautama — the Buddha — the most consequential member of the śramaṇa movement who forced the orthodox schools to sharpen their own positions. This lecture covers: The fifth-century BCE world of the Ganges plain and the śramaṇa ferment The four sights, the Great Renunciation, and the night of awakening The First Sermon at Benares: the two extremes rejected, the Middle Way, and the noble eightfold path The Four Noble Truths: diagnosis, cause, prognosis, and treatment The three forms of craving (bhava-taṇhā, vibhava-taṇhā) and the twelvefold penetration Dependent arising (paṭicca-samuppāda) and the denial of a permanent self The Sangha and the Vinaya as institutional innovations The Buddha contrasted with Jaimini, Kaṇāda, Yājñavalkya, and the materialists The parable of the poisoned arrow: why philosophy must serve liberation, not curiosity The legacy: from Abhidharma through Nāgārjuna to the enduring conversation All quotations from the First Sermon are drawn from T. W. Rhys Davids' translation of the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Sacred Books of the East, Vol. XI). Modern scholarship consulted includes Rupert Gethin, Richard Gombrich, and Walpola Rahula. 📚 This lecture completes the Indian philosophy series. Previous lectures cover Mīmāṃsā, Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, Sāṃkhya, Yoga, Upaniṣadic thought, Jainism, Cārvāka, and more.
